Two suspects arrested over planned ₦50m ransom demand in Ogun foiled Chinese abduction

Date:

Two principal suspects in connection with a planned ₦50,000,000 ransom demand in foiled abduction of Chinese nationals in Ogun State.

A joint security team involving operatives of Obalende Division of the Ogun State Police Command, foiled the operation where the two suspects, Chinedu Onwuemena ‘M’, aged 41 years, and Jimoh Ojo ‘M’, aged 37 years, were arrested by the police.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, said security agents are on the trail of a fleeing accomplice linked to the crime.

He revealed that the suspects were arrested on June 9, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m., following credible and actionable intelligence received by the Divisional Police Officer indicating an imminent kidnapping plot along the Ijebu-Ode/Odogbolu Expressway corridor.

He said, “Acting on the intelligence, the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised operatives of the Division, including the Surveillance Team, to the identified axis, where the suspects were promptly intercepted and arrested, thereby thwarting the execution of the planned crime.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects had jointly conspired to abduct a Chinese national and extort a ransom of ₦50,000,000. Further findings showed that Chinedu Onwuemena, who worked within the company environment as an interpreter and driver, allegedly exploited his position to facilitate the criminal plan”, according to him.

Police investigations further established that the arrested suspects did not act alone but in concert with another accomplice who is currently at large.

The statement also said efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing suspect, while discrete investigations continue to unravel the full extent of the criminal network behind the conspiracy.

Accordingly, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for comprehensive and discreet investigation on orders of the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, who commended the professionalism, vigilance, and swift response of the operatives of Obalende Division, whose proactive action prevented what could have resulted in a serious kidnapping incident.

The CP also acknowledges the value of timely intelligence, which once again underscores the importance of community partnership in crime prevention and security management.

He reassures residents and the business community that the Ogun State Police Command remains firmly committed to intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, and the relentless pursuit of criminal elements threatening public peace and safety.

The police Commissioner advised members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the Police by promptly reporting suspicious movements or activities, while tasking them to provide credible information, contact the Police telephone numbers in the State.
