Tinubu reverses Maryam Sanda’s pardon

Date:

The earlier clemency granted to Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death in 2020 for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, by the federal government has been revoked by President Bola Tinubu.

Consequently, Tinubu, also approved new measures restricting future pardons for offenders convicted of serious crimes, including Sanders whose jail term has been reduced to 12 jail term.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga said on Wednesday in a statement that President’s action was exercising his constitutional powers of prerogative of mercy as captured under Section 175(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Recall that President Tinubu ordered a review of the presidential pardon granted to at least 175 persons at the National Council of State meeting on October 9, 2025, after nationwide outrage by Nigerians over the inclusion of individuals convicted of serious offences.
