The life of a 22-year-old fresh graduate of University of Benin (UNIBEN), Miss Glory Adekolure who attempted to break the record of becoming the first graduate in her family, ended in tragedy on June 13, 2024.
Adekolure’s life was cut short at a yet-to-be named street in Iyowa village, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State by a gang of rapists, four years after burning the midnight oil to better her life throughout her Course in the University.
A spatter of red dots like blood droplets, from the victim’s body, which was found on the lonely footpath. The road was a regular way home for Glory Adekolure who will never walk again after her sojourn on earth ended.
The brutal rape and murder inflamed tempers among the terrified Community after the suspect who hailed from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State went into hiding.
The development prompted swift justice by the crack Team who had been mobilised after a tip-off as to where the gang were hiding out in Asaba, Delta State.
The investigation has opened unearth four addition slain young girls linked to the self-confessed alleged murderer, Happy Godwin, CP Funsho Adegboye, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State who assured that the suspect would be paraded when ongoing investigation is concluded.
He revealed that the suspect has been traced to Igbuzo in Delta State where he was arrested by police operatives. This was after Governor Godwin Obaseki who expressed shock and sadness over the incident, handed down 7-day ultimatum to the Commissioner to fish out her killers.
Channels Television reports said the house where Adekolure was said to have lived with her widowed mother, Mrs Benedicta Adekololure before the incident happened, has been deserted.
The distraught widow who is survived by four other Children, appealed to concerned authorities to ensure justice is served.
“My daughter went to submit her project and was killed while returning home. President Bola Tinubu, Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Commissioner of Police; I plead with you all. Let justice be served.
Mr Peter Odi, the victim’s neighbour attested to the character of the victim.
He said, “That girl hardly leave her house unless she goes to get water”, he said, Glory was the last born in her family”.
A resident of Iyowa village, Mr Etinosa Ighodaro said the villagers will place a curse on the perpetrators of the wicked act.
Giving insight into the investigation, the spokesman for the Nigeria Police Command in Edo State, SP Chidi Nwabuzor said, “police operatives got to Iyowa where Glory and her mother resides, they saw her dead body lying down lifeless without skirt, trouser or shirt.
“A close look behind her shoulder, they discovered an injury. They also discovered blood coming out from her private and her buttocks”, he said.
What is galling – and devastating – is the revelation by the suspect, currently cooling his feet in police custody, is the Adekolures will forever live with the pain of losing their beloved one. Sadly, this has become the main theories behind the heinous crime .
