The Datti paradox: Why consistency and language define the 2027 political realities

Nigerian political communication has long operated on tactical ambiguity, yet few figures illustrate the friction between intellectual pedigree and public coherence quite like Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed.

From his prominent role as Peter Obi’s 2023 running mate under the Labour Party during the last general elections to his subsequent shifts—leaving Labour for the PRP by April 2026—Datti’s public record highlights a crucial lesson for modern leaders: voters decide on ethos and narrative coherence first.

The Weight of Credentials vs. The Power of Ethos

With a PhD, a background in successful entrepreneurship (founding Baze University and its teaching hospital), and legislative experience, Datti represents the conventional “complete package.”

However, modern political psychology—drawing from classical theories of ethos, pathos, and logos—reveals that an impressive resume cannot substitute for clear communication.

When public statements swing from predicting unconstitutionality during the 2023 elections to navigating complex alignments and later questioning the capacity of major contenders, the absence of a connecting narrative invites public skepticism.

Communication scholars note that while leaders are free to change their minds as circumstances evolve, the burden rests on the speaker to provide a narrative bridge. Without it, audiences fill gaps with doubt, and frequent public commentary risks triggering the “availability heuristic”—where a constant voice faces heightened chances of self-contradiction.

As Nigeria looks toward future political realignments, the fundamental currency of leadership remains unchanged: language, emotional intelligence, and unwavering narrative consistency.
