Teacher demoted for assaulting Corps member

Kwara State government has demoted a public school teacher, Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike, accused of assaulting a National Youth Corps (NYSC) member, by two-grade levels and transferred from the school.

Last week incident happened Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin where she was deployed to undertake her one year mandatory Service.

Photographs of the the Corps member was accused of disrespecting a teacher when she went to collect her clearance letter from the school last week Thursday.

But, the State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar, confirmed this in a joint statement on Monday.

The statement said embattled teacher Nike, is to undergo counselling session having been indicated by the investigative panel, set up on the matter found her guilty of fighting on duty, use of foul language, insubordination, and disrespect for the national identity which the uniform of the corp members represent.

“Her behaviour contravenes Public Service rules, and she has therefore been demoted by two-grade levels, the statement said, “the State Government will not tolerate such abuse under any guise”.

“The government deeply regrets the action of the teacher and reassures the management of the National Youth Service Corps that the development did not represent the people of the state, and it will not happen again,” the statement said.

It also urge teachers in the State to remain law abiding at all times by performing their duties in accordance with the laid-down procedure as the state government will continue to prioritise training on teaching ethics and procedures of service.

Spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Command in Kwara State, DSP Adeyemi Adetoun had said during an interview with TheNewspad Editor that the victim of assault was yet-to-formally report the incident to the police Command.

“No official complaint has been made by the Corps member anywhere. I am not aware, but I saw it online.

“For police to step in and investigate, she ought to make a the complaint official so that we can take up the case. As it stands now, I do not know who the person is”, according to the police spokesperson.
