Suspended Anambra monarchs make U-turn, withdraw Ubah’s title

Three suspended monarchs in Anambra State have bowed to pressure, withdrawing the Chieftaincy title conferred on the Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

The State government previously described the actions of the embattled monarchs as a violation of the Code of Conduct in the State Ministry of Chieftaincy and Community Affairs.

Christian Aburime, Press Secretary to the State governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo confirmed the apology letters written by the embattled traditional rulers and addressed to the Governor in a statement on Tuesday January 16.

This comes few days after the State Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon. Tony Collins Nwabuneane vide a statement on behalf of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo suspended the traditional ruler of Neni, Anaocha Local Government Area, HRH Igwe Damain Ezeani for conferring the title on a person outside his kingdom without clearance from the Ministry as required by law.

Aburime acknowledged that Igwe F.E. Ebelendu of Aguluezechukwu in Aguata Local government Area, Igwe Onwuamaeze Damian Ezeani of Neni in Anaocha Local government Area and Igwe Gerald Obunadike Mbamalu of Ojoto in Idemili South Local government Areas of the State have respectively apologized to Anambra State government for the misconduct.

The Governor’s spokesman said, “This action by the the three traditional rulers was in direct contravention of the State Traditional Rulers’ code, which outlines the rules and regulations regarding approval and revocation of Chieftaincy titles.

The statement said, “Consequently, the titles of Ikemba Ojoto, Odenjiinji Neni and Dike Eji Eje Ogu earlier bestowed on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah have been withdrawn and cancelled by the three Igwes”.

Aburime explained that the monarchs’ letters of apology to the State government, also confirmed the withdrawal and cancellation of what he termed ‘phantom Chieftaincy titles’, which they variously described as ‘nullity’.

Aburime in the statement advised traditional rulers to adhere strictly to the State Traditional laws and avoid any untoward action that could contravene the provisions of the law.

TheNewspad reports that the U-turn by the affected monarchs is to pacify the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN turned Governor to lift their suspension in the coming days.
