Supporters kick as court sends Sowore to prison

Date:

Supporters of Omoyele Sowore have expressed concerns following his remand at the Custodial Centre of the Nigerian Correctional service, Kuje Area District.

The decision arose from his revocation of his bail and the bench warrant for his arrest by the court when Sowore, who arrived the court with his supporters on Monday.

He told newsmen at the premises of the court on Monday morning that he knew that, the trial judge, would order his detention the same day.

The defendant, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court in the company of members of his group carrying placards.

The court had, on June 16, revoked a bail granted to Sowore following his failure to appear in court for his trial regarding his alleged cybercrime offences, which was branded as offensive by political figures and Department of State Security Services, DSS.

Justice Umar, in a ruling on an oral application made by the lawyer to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN, also issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore for allegedly making false claims against the person of President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in a post he made on his “X” and Facebook accounts.

Sowore supporters have flooded comments sessions on social, with many pledging their solidarity, while others, described his trial as politically motivated.
