Some officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have been suspended for alleged sexual scandal that hit the Custodial Centre involving female inmates in Yobe State.
NCoS spokesperson and Chief Superintendent of Corrections Jane Osuji said in a statement that
officers allegedly involved in unprofessional conduct with inmates in one of its custodial centres in Yobe State.
She however did not give details of the scandal that led to their suspension, which takes immediate effect, pending the conclusion of a full-scale investigation by NCoS.
Queries and Charge Sheets have been issued to other personnel to explain their involvement or otherwise in the incident, according to Osuji who said the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the suspension after receiving the preliminary investigation report.
Tunji-Ojo who is also the Chairman of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) reaffirmed that allegations of misconduct within any agency under the Board will not be tolerated.
The NCoS maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for all forms of misconduct, negligence, rights violations, or inappropriate relationships between staff and inmates. Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary measures and possible legal sanctions in line with established regulations.
The Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, assured the public of the Service’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, integrity, and the rule of law.
He explained that all correctional facilities across the country will continue to operate strictly in accordance with extant laws, ethical standards, and operational procedures.
