Senate postpones public hearing on sabotage in petroleum sector

The Nigerian Senate has deferred its investigation into alleged sabotage in the petroleum industry, citing the need for wider consultations with stakeholders whose input and participation will add value to the conclusion on investigative hearing, The Guardian said.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Leader conveyed the position of the Committee on Sunday in a statement said the public hearing had been postponed due to “legislative exigencies aimed at further deepening due diligence” and further consultations.

He said, “while we deeply regret all inconveniences it may have caused all the stakeholders collectively or individually, this decision was taken purely and solely in the national interest”.

The 15-man ad hoc Committee inaugurated on July 22, 2024, headed by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), was set up by the red Chamber to investigate billions of Naira spent on maintaining Nigeria’s refineries.

It was also changed to spotlight the regulatory Agencies claims over the non payment to transporters and unravel alleged importation of hazardous petroleum products and dumping of diesel into the nation as well as make recommendations.
