Supporters of Peter Obi, the 2027 Presidential Candidate for Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC clashed with hoodlums at rally the weekend in Warri, Delta State, raising concerns.
The campaigners came under attack at the weekend when hoodlums wielding machetes and other dangerous weapons, launched the attack, which was retaliated by Obi supporters en route Warri airport Road.
NDC supporters stood their ground and fought back the attackers who later fled amid songs solidarity and chants, captured in a viral video where a uniform security operative fired gunshots to scare the hoodlums away from barricading Access roads in Warri.
The incident had triggered vitriolic reactions on social media, particularly amongst Nigerians who blamed State actors for the attempts to shrink the democratic space and violate citizens rights to engagement.
Prior to that security forces had ignored safety and early warning signs in the locality.
In the meantime, reactions have trailed the clash X (formerly Twitter)
Desperate politics is back, but the people are no longer cowed. What happened along Warri Airport Road is a sad reminder of how threatened establishment actors are. Kudos to the resolute stance.

The recent clash in Warri, Delta State, where campaign supporters came under attack by thugs wielding dangerous weapons, should worry every well-meaning Nigerian.
Political campaigns are supposed to be a battle of ideas, manifestos, and track records—not a theater of war.
While it is inspiring to see citizens stand their ground against intimidation, we must ask: Where was the proactive security? Why are thugs being deployed to stifle opposition presence in public spaces?
If 2027 must be different, security must be guaranteed for all political actors regardless of party lines.
