Police rescue man from lynching over alleged desecration of shrine

Operatives of Nigeria Police Command in Ogun State have taken a suspect, Jeremiah Nwoke into its custody after rescuing him from been lynched by a mob for allegedly damaging

Agemo statue (shrine) at Itoro Roundabout, Ijebu Ode area of the State.

In a statement, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola revealed that the incident happened on Saturday April 12, 2025.

The statement said, “Prompt response by the police at the scene calmed tension and prevented potential violent escalation by traditional worshippers”.

It also said the “male adult identified as Jeremiah Nwoke, desecrated the revered Agemo shrine by severing its crown, which has since been recovered and in safe custody at Obalende Police station”.

The police image maker disclosed that suspect is presently undergoing psychological evaluation, as initial observations suggest signs of mental instability.

The statement further assured that “Ijebu Ode remains calm”, and accordingly advised members of the public of their safety as investigation into the incident continues”.

TheNewspad reports that there has been outrage especially amongst traditional worshippers over the alleged desecration of the shrine, which was said to have struck the criminal suspect who removed its crown at the weekend in the State.
