Police prevent looting in ex-gov’s residence

The Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Mohammed Gumel has revealed how his men prevented hoodlums from looting Mr Ibrahim Shekarau’s residence in Kano State, which was gutted by fire, weekend.

A yet-to-be identified personal aide to Shekarau, was also wounded when pandemonium broke out when the fire that occured shortly after the Kano Electricity Distribution Company restored power.

The blaze was first noticed at the kitchen which went up in flames – forcing residents to scamper to safety, while valuables were lost to the disaster.

Addressing journalists, CP Mohammed Gumel said after he received a distress report of the incident, he mobilized his men to the area.

“In one of rooms – Her Excellency’s room burst into flames. We never knew until the smoke started.

“It was when one his wives perceived the smoke, everybody started running.

“We got a terrible report that fire has engulfed the residence of a statesman, former Governor of the State.

“We felt it was necessary after the initial action of deployment to the area to ensure that intruders do not come and take advantage.

“We came here with my management team to see our leader

“He (Shekarau) is a leader to all people of Kano State. He is a father.

“We wish to remind residence to always be mindful on how they use electrical appliances”, CP Gumel stressed.

Prominent Nigerians, including business mogul, Aminu Dantata are have paid a solidarity visit to Shekarau’s home.

The two-term former Governor of Kano, was at one time Nigeria’s Minister of Education.
