Police alert parents on tragedy in Benin river

Police authorities in Edo State have alerted parents and Guardians on the tragedy involving a yet-to-be identified young boy that drowned in the Ikpoba River in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area on 17th November, 2025.

Spokesman of the Nigeria Police Command, CSP Moses Joel confirmed this on Friday in a statement.

He explained that the body of the boy believed to be about 12 years, was recovered by operatives of the New Benin Division and deposited at the hospital for autopsy.

CSP Yamu stated that investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“In light of this unfortunate development, the Command strongly advises parents and guardians to exercise greater vigilance over their children and wards, especially during this festive and dry-season period when young persons are more likely to engage in risky adventurous outdoor activities, unsupervised.

“Any parent or guardian whose child matches the aforementioned description is missing, is advised to report to New Benin Division.

“The Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and urges the public to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities or missing persons promptly”, according to the police.
