OAU student commits suicide over ‘low score’

The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, has opened inquiry into the death of one of its students, who reportedly committed suicide over ‘low score’ at the just released Examinations Results by the school.

The Public Relations Department of the University has yet to re respond to TheNewspad inquiry, but President of Obafemi Awolowo University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA), Adebayo Idris confirmed the death of the yet-to be named male student’s on Wednesday August 13th 2025 in a statement.

Describing the incident as a devastating loss, the Association said the student gave up the ghost after a prolonged struggle with his undisclosed mental health challenges.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry.

“We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of examination results”, the statement said, “mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles”.

Continuing, the statement said, “This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face.

“As an association, we are devastated, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him”.

While awaiting the official announcement of the University’s Management, TheNewspad investigation revealed that the University Authorities have contacted the deceased family members.

The tragedy has kept netizens talking on social media, re-echoing the need for government policy to creating psycho-social support Desk across institutions.
