A ranking member of the
National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW reportedly lost one of ears when suspected hoodlums attacked the National Union of Road Transport Workers, headquarters in Garki II, Abuja, Monday March 24.
Accordingly, seven suspects linked to the attack have been arrested and charged to Magistrate court 1, Wuse Zone 2 in Federal Capital Territory, following the incident.
The brutal attack followed attempts by Tajideen Baruwa-led NURTW faction to unseat Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, the National President of the union on the NURTW premises without the presence of court sheriffs and other officials, after a court ruling, which the later insisted is pending before an appeal court
The spokesperson of the Nigeria police Command in FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were attempting to enforce a court order on the premises without the presence of court sheriffs and other officials of the union.
“This action, according to the police, degenerated into a physical confrontation when other members of the NURTW attempted to resist them, leading to one victim being inflicted with severe machete wounds to the neck”, SP Adeh stated.
She identified the arrested suspects as Sulaiman A Musa, Nasiru Ibrahim, Alhaji Sadisu Musa, Dalha Suleiman, Abdullahi Garba, Saheed Fojebi and Ibikunle T. Baruwa.
The statement explained that the wounded victim in the melee, while several others who sustained varying degree of injuries were rescued by the police to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Police recalled, “On 23rd of March 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m., a distress call was received by the FCT Police Command reporting that about 300 individuals, armed with cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows, had stormed the NURTW headquarters along Sapele Street, Garki II, Abuja, and were removing items from the premises”.
“In a swift response, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, led a response team to the scene. Upon arrival”, SP. Adeh said normalcy has since been restored to the area” by police authorities.
The statement drew the attention of Nigerians to a misleading footage circulating on social, while denying the alleged shooting at some members of NURTW by police deployed to the Secretariat to maintain law and order, after violence broke out.
