Electricity transmission equipment is facing imminent collapse that could cause a devasting damage due to illegal mining activities around the Transmission Company of Nigeria equipment in Edo State.
The Governor of the State, Mr Godwin Obaseki said this during an inspection tour of the burrow pit site on Wednesday at Obagie ‘N Evbosa village in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the State.
The Governor in company of other members of the State Executive Council, threatened tough Sanctions for mining officials issuing illegal authorization to operators of burrow pit.
He described the menace as a threat to the environment and warned that the Government will show its full might and force if the mineral exploration that could cause landslides and mudslides continue.
According to him, “The National Transmission Company issued a warning that even transmission lines are being threatened because people are borrowing and taking sands around areas that are hosting national infrastructure.
“In the next few years, people in these communities will begin to experience landslides and mudslides because of the way these mining activities are being carried out.
“This is not right. We can’t continue to do this to ourselves. Our City is under threat and this government will do all to stop all those illegally mining sands here.”
