Murder: Edo APC threatens to boycott peace pact

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has threatened to boycott Peace Pact by political parties and Candidates in the September 21st Edo State governorship poll to protest against murder of Senator Monday Okpebholo’s orderly, Inspector. Akor Onu, who was gunned down on July 18th 2024 by political thugs near Benin Airport exit gate in Benin City.

The State Chairman of APC, Jarrett Tenebe who issued the threat at Edo State Peace Summit, which was supported by Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) and Civil Society Situation Room.

Tenebe alleged injustice arising from brutal assault of its members and delayed prosecution of culprits behind the murder as reasons why APC may shun the pact.

He said, “There can be no justice if something is not done to those who killed Senator Okpebholo’s orderly. It’s difficult to go and put our hands in signing the peace Accord”.

“Some of those who killed him are in Government House, “according to him, lamenting that after putting a petition on the alleged murder to the police high Command, which he claimed is yet to avenge Onu’s death.

A former Minority Whip of the House of Representatives, Dr Samson Osagie and a former deputy Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Paul Ohonbamu, aligned with the submission of Tenebe and demanded for justice in the already heated election season.

But the Chief Imam of Benin Central Mosque, Alhaji Abdulfatai Enabulele, reassured that voters in Edo State will not be intimidated or deterred by political actors threats in exercising their franchise in the election.

Chairperson of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Reverend Margaret Oghosa Agbonifo whose goodwill message was delivered by Reverend Phil Arojie, decried the influx of fake news as the point of contention in the election whose stakes are high.

The Executive Director of African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Reverend David Ugolor also delivered a goodwill message at the event where he took into account the need for stakeholders in the election to play by the rules and guidelines towards peaceful and credible election.

TheNewspad reports that members of Civil Society Organizations, Media, Nigeria Police personnel, religious and traditional rulers and political analysts attended the ceremony where participants lamented the violence ahead of the election.
