Date:

A viral video of two newly admitted male student of University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State made a romantic marriage proposal to a female course mate during the 2025/2026 Matriculation on Ugbowo Campus in the tertiary institution has sent social media Community into rapture.

The romantic encounter captured the male student going down on one knee shortly after the conclusion of the formal proceedings.

The excited moment invoked the attention of onlookers when the male student was seen presenting a ring to the female student, who was clad in the University’s official Matriculation gown at the moment.

The visibly overwhelmed young lady over the surprise gesture, accepted the proposal, amid loud applause and chants from students who converged outside the ceremony venue.

According to Blueprint online, ‎the spontaneous act briefly shifted attention from the academic solemnity of the event, which formally ushered thousands of newly admitted students into the University for the 2025/2026 academic session.

While some netizens, applauding the courage of the young man, with others describing the moment as memorable, other social media users have raised concerns about the appropriateness of such a gesture involving freshes during an official academic ceremony where 15077 students matriculated.

The Management of the University of Benin had yet to issue an official statement on the romantic incident.
