Man set on fire by neighbour dies in Edo hospital

A middle-aged man, Junior Ogbomo set on fire by his neighbour who reportedly doused him in petrol, lit a matchstick and hurled it at him last week in Otofure Community, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, has lost his life battle.

The victim who hailed from Utekon — a neighbouring Community, suffered ’70 degree burn’, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday July 15th 2025 at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Ugbowo in Benin.

The fleeing criminal simply identified Mr Christian, who lived in the same house with the victim in the Community, however fled the incident, prompting a member of Edo State Security Corps to bring the incident to light during a Benin-based Radio interview.

The security agent who gave his name as Mr Favour disclosed that he intervened after he ran to a local vigilantes office where he appealed to take him to hospital and save the life of the victim who however died few days later the UBTH.

Recalling the troubling incident, Favour said, “two of my officers saw him (Ogbomo) and called my attention to it.

He said, “I began to question him. He told me him and his neighbour who lived in the same passage house with him at Otofure by the Bypass, leading to Utekon Community in the same Local Government Area”.

TheNewspad reports that the victim can be held in a viral footage which made netizens talking said, “help. Do not allow me to die”.

Spokesman for the Nigeria Police Command in Edo State, SP Moses Yamu could not be reached at the time of filing this report.

A top police officer living in the neighborhood where the crime was allegedly committed, assured that the fugitive will be caught and prosecuted.
