Reports of leaked Basic Certificate Examinations (BECE) question papers by the Edo State Ministry of Education prior to the scheduled date of Thursday, June 13, 2024, for the commencement of the examinations have sparked a wave of debate among stakeholders.
The question papers, including the printed Mathematics subject for the June 2024 examinations, have been seen by some private and public school teachers and students in the state ahead of the scheduled commencement date for the examinations.
Members of the main opposition party in the state stated that the leak was planned by the government to close the attainment gap in the EdoBEST school program, a claim that has been denied by the state government.
Educators, especially Edo State private school owners and parents, are demanding transparency and accountability in the way government business is conducted and the sanctioning of culprits regardless of their social status.
Investigations revealed that some JSS3 public and private school students being administered the examination papers have surreptitiously subscribed to the documents, which has damaged social trust.
A top official in the State Ministry of Education said the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe, has charged stakeholders to review the alleged examination malpractice and predicted likely cancellations of some of the examination papers.
The source said the move is part of the options that were mulled by concerned members of Parents Teachers who have expressed concern over the one-week compulsory break that shut down primary and secondary schools.
Besides, the Monday, June 17th, and Tuesday, June 18th, 2024, two-day Sallah holidays have added to the challenge.
