Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has demanded for 30 per cent cut in President Bola Tinubu salary and other public office holders towards reducing cost of governance in Nigeria.
It also proposed 20-30 per cent pay from National and States House of Assemblies and Governors and enact a law that will make reputable Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to recommend credible Nigerians as INEC National Commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioners.
The group made the recommendation to the joint National Assembly Committee Matters September 2nd on Monday at the Federal Capital Territory where they reviewed the possibility of diaspora voting in elections.
IPAC also proposed amendment in the 2022 Electoral Act, and address other contentious issues, and make it mandatory for Presidential, National and State House of Assemblies and governorship elections conducted the same day by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
In addition, IPAC proposed a law that will make it mandatory for future election results to be transmitted electronically in Nigeria.
Addressing journalists in the sideline of the meeting, the Executive Director, Policy and Legal Advocacy, Mr Clement Nwankwo said, “that Act remains very outstanding. There is a lot that can be done to ensure it’s faithful implementation guide in our next elections”.
He noted that “if we do not improve on the implementation of the electoral Act, 2022 before the next elections, our Country’s democracy will be severely challenged”.
But, the national Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Mr Ajobola Basiru, disagree with the call for diaspora voting in Nigeria elections and cleared some misconceptions about the jumbo pay of salaries for National Assembly members.
