How fatal shootings in Plateau sparked a standoff between Army, police personnel

Date:

A disturbing viral video capturing a heated, tense confrontation between armed soldiers and police officers at Bassa in Plateau State has left the public demanding answers.

Now, the military has broken its silence to reveal the chaotic sequence of events that led to the inter-agency showdown in Bassa Local Government Area.

The drama unfolded on October 20, 2026, following reports of sporadic gunfire piercing through the communities of Mai Farin Moto and Maraban Dere. According to military authorities, troops under Operation Enduring Peace received an urgent distress call reporting that a local resident, identified as Adamu Suleiman, had been shot dead.

Deployed rapidly to assess the threat and stabilize the area, the soldiers arrived at a scene already shrouded in confusion and heightened danger.

Instead of a joint effort to track down the killers, the deployment descended into friction when troops encountered police officers already operating on the ground.

Hoping to establish a coordinated security response, soldiers approached the police personnel to clarify the situation.

However, the interaction quickly deteriorated, with military officials describing the encounter as being plagued by a frustrating “lack of cooperation” from some police personnel, despite efforts by troop commanders to de-escalate growing tensions and enforce operational discipline.

The resulting confrontation—captured in a widely circulated video—showed a fiery exchange between the two security forces, sparking public outrage and raising serious questions about inter-agency coordination.

Addressing the viral clip in a formal statement on Sunday, October 25, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force, insisted that the military’s intentions were purely operational.

He emphasized that the soldiers’ deployment was prompted by an operational distress call intended to protect lives and property, rather than create confrontation with other security agencies, adding that effective security relies on mutual respect, coordination, and adherence to established protocols.

While the statement sheds light on why troops were in Bassa, key details remain shrouded in secrecy.

The military did not disclose the specific heated exchanges recorded in the video, nor did it identify the individual police officers involved in the altercation.

The Joint Task Force confirmed that high-level inter-agency channels have been activated to investigate the root cause of the breakdown, establish the full facts, and prevent future clashes between security personnel, while urging the public and media to avoid spreading unverified accounts that could further undermine trust between sister security agencies.

As answers remain sparse and tensions linger, the Bassa encounter stands as a stark reminder of the fragile thread holding inter-agency trust together — where a single breakdown in communication can turn a rescue mission into an dangerous battle of wills.
