The Anambra State Police Command has reiterated that motorists using tinted-glass vehicles are required to obtain the appropriate permit, saying the regulation is aimed at enhancing public safety and effective policing.
The Command made this known in a statement issued on Monday by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, following an incident in which police officers reportedly rejected a ₦200,000 bribe offered by a motorist stopped for using tinted glass without the required permit.
According to the statement, the officers rejected the money and instead directed the motorist to either remove the unauthorised tint from the vehicle or obtain the appropriate permit where applicable.
The Command commended the officers for demonstrating discipline and professionalism, describing their action as evidence of its resolve to enforce the law without compromise.
It explained that the tinted-glass permit requirement was not intended to harass or inconvenience law-abiding motorists, but to regulate vehicles with tinted glasses for security purposes.
The police said heavily tinted vehicles could create operational challenges for law enforcement, particularly where the visibility of occupants is necessary during security checks and other policing activities.
It added that vehicle owners who do not wish to obtain a tinted-glass permit could simply remove the tint from their vehicles.
The Command consequently advised motorists and vehicle owners to comply with the applicable regulations and desist from offering money or other inducements to police officers to evade lawful enforcement.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, also urged members of the public to report any officer who demands money in connection with tinted-glass enforcement or any other police duty.
