Tragedy struck when a health worker simply identified as Mr Alex was allegedly shot dead by suspected vengeance-seeking armed cultists battling for supremacy, amid serious security crisis in parts of Edo State.
It was learnt that the victim — staffer of the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Uselu in Benin, was murdered behind the wheel of his own car by assailants who were trailed him to Uselu Lagos road by Medical junction while he was returning home after he closed from work.
Investigation revealed that the victim gave up the ghost immediately after his fatal attack that occurred last weekend, according to a disturbing footage of the alleged crime on social media.
It was also gathered that Alex’s attackers watched him dead, before they dispersed from the crime scene ahead of arrival of some police personnel from the Nigeria Police, Okhoro Division in Egor Local Government Area arrived and evacuated his body.
Neither police authorities nor the Management of the hospital has yet to issue a statement regarding the tragic incident, which has set terrified Benin City residents on edge.
Similarly, the younger brother of Benin based former President of Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, escaped death by whiskers last week Friday event at about 5p.m when suspected armed cultists attacked him near the back gate of Oredo Local Government Council Secretariat, Benin City.
In May 2025, a Physiotherapist, Dr Alex Oguniyi, was killed when gunmen invaded the premises of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH injuring two other health workers when suspected cultists went berserk.
The tragedy prompted the Management of UBTH and Residents Doctors at the hospital to petition the Directorate of the State Security Service, DSS and the Commissioner of Police in Edo State to unmask the hoodlums who invaded and killed the Physiotherapist and prosecute the culprits.
A similar incident happened in 2024, when unknown gunmen invaded a private Clinic at Aduwawa Community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area and allegedly murdered a medical doctor.
The tragedy occurred late 2024 when violence between two rival rival groups of members of the brotherhood erupted in the State.
The menace of cult violence relapsed after the State government in collaboration with. heads of Security agencies reviewed their strategies arising from extreme cases of human rights abuses and violation by some security agents.
But Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, appears unreturned by armchair critics and determined to tighten the noose against criminals and cultists by sealing property linked to their sponsors in the State, for demolition when there are sufficient evidences in that regard.
Meanwhile, no fewer than 20 suspected cultists have been arrested by Edo Special Security Squad, which was recently set up by the State government to clampdown on criminal elements in the State.
The suspects were arrested Isiohor, Iguosa, Oluku, Ibiwe/Lagos Street, and other notorious hideouts for criminals in Benin City.
