Group backs UBTH CMD, warns against blackmail

Date:

A socio-cultural group, Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide has declared strong support for the Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, stating that no individual or group can blackmail her from carrying out well-conceived reforms at the institution.

At a press conference on February 23, 2026, the group commended the hospital’s current leadership, referring to Prof. Ize-Iyamu’s administration as focused on transparency, financial discipline and improved service delivery.

The non-partisan group alleged that a review of UBTH’s financial processes before her assumption of office uncovered questionable payment practices involving multiple Point of Sale (PoS) vendors, adding that the present management has since introduced corrective measures to enhance accountability and ease patient payments.

It also praised the administration for steps taken to curb diversion of hospital supplies and strengthen governance structures, noting that the hospital has maintained services despite economic pressures and industrial disruptions in the health sector.

Among key achievements highlighted were the commissioning of a 160-slice CT scan machine, infrastructure upgrades, institutional restructuring and the introduction of the Consumables Pack System to promote transparency in patient care.

The group further noted that the management facilitated the recruitment of over 230 personnel and regularised some contract staff, while integrating private laboratories through a Public-Private Partnership to sustain service delivery during disruptions.

Urging critics to channel concerns through appropriate platforms, the movement said UBTH deserves constructive support rather than distraction, expressing confidence that Prof. Ize-Iyamu’s CARES agenda will further reposition the tertiary hospital.
