Three grave diggers and a herbalist have reportedly mutilated the body parts of Oriyomi Gboyega who died as a result of electrocution that occured at Ogidan area in Ogun State.
Spokesman for the Nigeria Police Command in Ogun State, SP Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident on Friday in a statement.
She revealed that the unethical herbalist practices were carried out at about 1:30a.m in a bush near the Igbosoro river in Igode village, Ogun State.
The lid was blown opened on September 20th 2024, according to information received from an intelligence source from the Divisional police officer of Igode area in Ogun.
13-year-old girl’s father, Sunday Adegboyega, asked the herbalist, identified as Ogidan Mustapha to help bury the deceased far from home on the 19th of September 2024 at about 10:20a.m.
But, the victim’s mother, Peace Adegboyega informed the police on the 20th of September 2024, at about 1:30 AM, following a suspicious activity was noticed in a bush near the Igbosoro river in Igode village.
The distraught mother, expressed shock upon learning that their neighbour, Ogidan, was found with the amputated body of her daughter in the bush, while arrangements were being made for her burial the following day.
Her complaint, prompted a search warrant that was executed at Ogidan Mustapha’s residence by the Divisional Police Officer and the Vigilante group that led to the suspects arrest.
SP Odutola, alleged that Ogidan Mustapha was arrested while dumping a wrapped corpse in a mat in the area alongside three other grave digger suspects whose names are yet-to-be disclosed.
The grave diggers of northern origin assisted in digging the grave were also held by the police, after the herbalist confessed to the crime.
The spokesperson explained that two English pump action rifles and various local charms were recovered in the herbalist’s house.
The quartet is set to have the date in court when investigation into the crime has been concluded by the police.
The statement further said, “Further information on the case will be provided, and those arrested will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation”.
Part of the statement reads, “Upon closer inspection by vigilante operatives, it was discovered that the corpse was a young girl, one Oriyomi Gboyega ‘f’ 13 year old with both of her hands amputated and wrapped in a mat before being discarded near the river.
“Upon contacting the mother, one Peace Adegboyega ‘F’, she stated that her daughter had died from electrocution on the 19th of September 2024 at about 10:20 AM, and arrangements were being made for her burial the following day”, the statement said.
