Some officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC narrowly escaped lynching by angry youths at Upper Mission Extension road in Oredo Loca Government Area of Edo State on Sunday.
The unidentified Corps, threw caution to the wind and laid siege on the road in defiance of Appeal Court ruling that restrained the FRSC to only federal roads, leading to a road crash.
Investigation revealed that during stop-and-check of particulars of motorists, a mini bus driver who attempted an escape from been booked for traffic violation, resulting in the accident.
The crash triggered resistance by the suspected driver of a commercial who block the branded FRSC Sienna vehicle, marked 518 on the road in a bid to call the public attention to the incident.
Violent broke out after a man suspected to the the driver of the mini bus, went berserk, removed his shirt and sat in front of the FRSC vehicle on the road, while pedestrians and onlookers watched.
A member of Edo Civil society Organization, Leftist Osazee Edigin said in a social media post that some of the road accident victims have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital.
He lamented that “despite the Appeal Court ruling that restrained the Corps to only federal roads in the country, they continue to violate the court order and extort Nigerians plying other categories of road”.
Efforts to reach out to authorities of FRSC for comments were unsuccessful, after its officials abandoned the government vehicle that temporally caused traffic jam, and too
k to flight.
