Fire guts mobile police office, Armoury in Benue

A fire disaster has destroyed the Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron 13 office and armoury in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

The incident was reported to have occurred in the early hours of Sunday, January 4, 2026, leaving key facilities within the formation razed.

Video footage circulating online shows the Mopol 13 complex engulfed in flames, with visible damage to the office structures and the armoury.

The footage also captures a voice describing the scale of destruction, alleging that the armoury and the Squadron Commander’s office were completely affected by the inferno.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had not been officially established.

It remains unclear whether the incident resulted from an electrical fault or any other factor.

Efforts to obtain official clarification were ongoing. The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Udeme Edet, had not issued a formal statement on the incident and was yet to respond our reporter’s enquiry to find out the cause of incident as at press time

Security sources indicated that investigations were expected to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of losses recorded.

Authorities are also expected to ascertain whether the incident was accidental or linked to any form of criminal activity.

More details are anticipated as police investigations progress.
