Female soldier gun down Captain over disagreement at checkpoint

A female soldier simply identified as Lance Corporal Nkiru, who reportedly killed her senior colleague with a rifle, has been disarmed and taken into custody.

The tragedy struck, while the victim was trying to intervene in an argument the female soldier had with civilians at Fire Service Round About checkpoint in Yola, Adamawa State Capital.

Daily Trust said the female soldier was enforcing the curfew imposed by Adamawa government. The curfew was declared after hoodlums broke into government warehouse and looted items, including foodstuffs (palliatives) meant to cushion the effect of petrol subsidy removal by the federal government.

The female soldier had insisted that motorists retuning home during the curfew hours must turn back according to the report that said some of travellers had identified themselves as workers on essential duty but she ignored their pleas.

A security source told the Newspaper that “Some people stopped at the check point explained themselves as workers on essential duties but the female soldier insisted they must turn back.

“A Captain came forward to intervene. Unfortunately she had already cocked her rifle, so she just fired and killed him accidentally,” according to the security officer.

The source also revealed that after the gunshot, the victim was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola for urgent medical attention where the Captain was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

A statement by the Nigerian Army authorities is being awaited.
