EFCC invites suspended Edo Council chairmen

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opened inquiry into the financial activities of the suspended 18 Local Government Councils chairmen in Edo State.

The EFCC through a letter dated Dec. 17, 2024, has invited the suspended Chairmen of the Local Government Councils to attend an interview at the Commission’s Benin Zonal Directorate.

In the letter, addressed to the Secretary of the State Government, the commission sought the release of the local government bosses for the investigation.

It directed the chairmen of Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, and Esan West, to report at the office on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024.

Others also expected at the Commission on Thursday were the chairmen of Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Etsako West Local Government Councils.

The remaining Chairmen from Igueben, Ikpoba-Okha, Orhionmwon, Ovia North East, Ovia South West, Owan East, Owan West, and Uhunmwode Local Government Councils were scheduled to report on Friday, December 20.

The EFCC requested that the chairmen come with certified true copies of comprehensive documentation relating to staff strength and payroll.

Investigation revealed that the embattled former Council officials had sought security protection in a bid to ward off arrest by men of the anti-graft agency.
