A police officer attached to the Nigeria Police Command in Edo State who was arrested and detained over alleged missing A-K 47 rifle assigned to him during official duty, is dead.
It was gathered that the light skin Cop only identified as Inspector Sani, died in Katsina State where he had gone to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration with his maternal family, after he was grilled in Ed police custody for days.
The over 6 feet tall Cop, was among the police personnel, deployed as Guards at a popular hotel near the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID in Benin City, Edo State, before he had the misfortune of being caught in the storm.
During his investigation, some armed police operatives had paraded Inspector Sani in handcuffs to his residence in Ofumwengbe street, off 2nd East Circular Road and one of his brother’s house in the locality and ransacked the place, but could not find the missing firearm.
A police source revealed that the Cop was after police authorities had obtained his statement under caution in connection with the missing rifle whose serial number could not immediately be verified,
belongs to the Nigeria Police, was thereafter taken into police custody for further interrogation.
Family members of late Inspector Sani based in Katsina State have alleged that the Cop may have been tortured while in custody, that could have led to his death arising from a suspected gunshot injury that was found on his palm that led to his death after he was released from police custody.
Aminu, a nephew to the deceased police officer, who shared the same apartment with late Inspector Sani, said his Uncle died years after he miraculously survived food poison that made him to stopped taking alcoholic drinks, but he later returned to his addiction a year later, after he was denied his promotion in the Force.
Spokesman of the Nigeria Police Command in Edo State, CSP Moses Yamu could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this investigative report.
