A police officer on duty, identified as Isah Abubakar, has drowned after fallen into a ditch while riding his bicycle to work following heavy rainfall in Damaturu, Yobe State Capital.
The spokesman of the Nigeria police Command in Yobe State, Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed on Monday 3rd August 2026 tragedy in a statement on Saturday.
The statement debunked a viral social media report, suggesting that an officer, died while rescuing a baby from floodwater in Damaturu.
Abdulkarim who cited an internal police signal also confirmed that Abubakar, who was attached to the Desert Intervention Squad, Haha Maza, died while on active service.
The statement urged Nigerians to verify information through reliable and official sources before either sharing it on social media or publishing.
