A police officer in Kogi State has reportedly taken his own life after shooting and killing his colleague and lover in a tragic incident linked to an ongoing prolonged relationship dispute.
Police Corporal Amos Yusuf, who was assigned to night-duty station guard, allegedly abandoned his post on Friday evening and proceeded to the quarters of his girlfriend, Woman Corporal Grace Abraham.
Sources report that Corporal Yusuf opened fire on Corporal Abraham with his service AK-47 rifle, inflicting fatal gunshot wounds to her shoulder, lower abdomen, and leg, before turning the weapon on himself.
Unverified reports indicate that the couple had been dating for several years but were recently experiencing severe trust issues and allegations of infidelity.
The disputes had previously escalated into physical confrontations and threats, leading the Divisional Crime Officer to detain and counsel both officers to end the relationship.
The Kogi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident, stating that an AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered at the scene.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for an in-depth investigation.
