With the sum of N32.5 million up for grab at the 2024 edition of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT), the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs Betsy Obaseki on Tuesday, reeled out the annual competition accomplishments aimed at harnessing potentials of girl-child in the past four years.
Dubbed, “say no to teen pregnancy and child motherhood”, the 2024
edition of the tournament billed for 2nd and 13th October, with the star prize set at N10 million.
At interactive session with the Media ahead of the pre-season competition, the Governor Godwin Obaseki wife said the pre-season tournament was her personal initiative in collaboration with private sector partners to groom and empower the girl-child.
She revealed that 14 teams, including two international female teams from Benin Republic would be participating in the tournament met to engender grassroots sports development in Edo State and Nigeria.
The teams include: Edo Queens FC, Fortress Ladies FC, Rivers Angels FC, Nasarawa Amazons FC, Naija Ratel FC, Heartland Queens FC, FC Robo and Ekiti Queens FC.
Others are Delta Queens FC, Confluence Queens FC, Bayelsa Queens FC, Abia Angels FC, Espoir FC de Cotonou, Benin Republic and Aigle Royal d’Adjara – Benin Republic.
“Since its inception in 2020, according to Mrs Obaseki, the tournament has grown remarkably, making a significant impact by providing a platform for our young girls to dream big and pursue their passions.
“Beyond nurturing our local talent, the tournament has also helped position our female football players on the global stage; with many of the girls from the past editions representing Nigeria on the international stage with distinction”, according to the First Lady of the State.
The First Lady also disclosed plans to raise the competition bar by setting up the Board of Trustees for this initiative to ensure the continuity and sustainability of the BOWFT.
She further announced the appointment of Nilayo Sports Marketing Limited as the Marketing Consultant for BOWFT and commended members of the team for their efforts so far.
