Blind woman accuses BEDC of meter’ theft

A visually-impaired woman, has asked the Management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) Management to take responsibility for her stolen Pre-paid meter by a male staff of the company under the ploy to carryout repair and return it to her.

Speaking during Tuesday morning programme on Radio station in Benin City, the property owner, introduced herself as ‘Mrs Evbuomwan’, alleged that she bought her BEDC meter through a Bank years ago before the sudden turn of event.

She alleged that the difficulties in loading BEDC token into the meter in her house at Egor, Egor Local Government Area of the State, made her to make formal complaint to the company’s annex at Evbuotubu area through one of her tenants.

The landlady further claimed that BEDC Evbuotubu annex thereafter assigned a staff to visit the residence and examine the meter, remove it from her house and pledged to return the it after fixing the meter.

Also, Mrs Evbuomwan, explained that while she was waiting for her Pre-paid meter, BEDC Management, placed electricity consumption in her house on ‘estimated billing’.

“This prompted tenants in her house to quit their apartments due over their inability to the expensive monthly electricity charges, out of which she pays N10,000 monthly”,. according to her.

The landlady lamented that after much agitations to reclaim her meter, Evbuotubu BEDC, yet referred her to visit another BEDC office on Ekehuan road in Benin City, the State Capital.

She also stated that she was advised to write formally to the Management of the company and provide ownership evidence (Bank teller), Police extract and other relevant documents, including her use past BEDC token slips and affidavit to the next time for necessary action.

After providing all the requirements, Mrs Evbuomwan said yet BEDC later learned from sources that her prepaid meter had been allocated to another customer illegally without her approval.

This development prompted her to raise alarm and appeal to concerned Nigerians to support her agitation towards return of her meter, according to her.

The visually-impaired woman who lives in Evbuotubu Community Egor LGA, said she is fed up with the hide-and-seek, noting that the unnamed BEDC Customer buys and use BEDC token into her Pre-paid meter monthly since the past months.

“As I am speaking, I am a blind woman. I was not born blind. I became blind after I underwent a surgical procedure.

“I bought that Pre-paid meter from a Bank years ago. Tenants in my house at Egor bought BEDC token and they were unable to load the card sometime ago. So, they reached out to BEDC and reported the case at Evbuotubu office.

“When they came to my house, they discovered that the meter was faulty, they removed the meter and promised to return it after the repair.

“Months later, they are yet to return my meter. Almost all the tenants have packed from the house because of BEDC estimated billing”, according to the victim.

TheNewspad investigation indicates that the Business Manager, Evbuotubu District, Timothy Omoruyi, has wade-into a stalemate, and accordingly launched inquiry into the crime.
