The Benue State House of Assembly has dismissed as false a viral social media report claiming that it is considering a bill to ban all forms of romantic relationships in the State.

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Terver Zamber, on Thursday, described the alleged Bill as a fabrication intended to mislead the public and tarnish the image of the 10th Assembly by mischief makers.

According to the statement, the fake Order Paper in circulation alleged that engaging in romantic relationships would constitute an offence punishable by law starting from January 2026.

The Assembly, however, maintained that no such bill has been presented, considered, or sponsored by any member.

“This misinformation is the handiwork of mischief makers who do not mean well for the 10th Benue State House of Assembly.

It is a deliberate attempt to deceive the unsuspecting public and tarnish the image of the Honourable House,” the statement read in part.

The Assembly clarified that every bill before it must be sponsored by duly elected Honourable Members representing their Constituencies, stating that the so-called bill in circulation had no sponsor and did not emanate from the House.

It further assured that under the leadership of the Speaker, Hon. Aondona Dajoh, the 10th Assembly remains committed to enacting people-oriented legislation that promotes peace, unity, progress, and the overall welfare of Benue citizens.

The Assembly urged the public to disregard the viral document and treat it as an unfortunate distraction.
