Archbishop Akubeze: Church announces candlelight processiong

The Catholic community has slated Wednesday July 15th 2026 for a candlelight procession in memory of the late Archbishop of Catholic church, Benin Metropolitan See, most Reverend Augustine Obiora Akubueze.

 

He died in the United States of America ahead of his retirement, was officially reported last week Thursday by the church authority, throwing worshippers into mourning.

 

Veritas Communication in Benin in a statement endorsed by the Chaplain, executives and extended Council of the church and published on social media, urged youths under the Metropolitan area, enjoined members of across various Campus Fellowships in tertiary institutions to attend the procession, which will begin at Holy Cross Cathedral on Mission Road in Benin by 4p.m.

 

The statement also urged “All deanery and parish presidents” to be in attendance with their youths as we pay homage to the departed Priest who joined his ancestors at age 69.

 

Ahead of his burial announcement by the church authority, the statement directs, “All youths should endeavour to come with a candle” at the solemn event and dress in black.
