A bill seeking the stoppage of consumption and sale of dog meat in Akwa Ibom State has been shut down by the State House of Assembly, brushing aside concerns about animal welfare and possible health risk.
The motion, presented by Uduak Ekpoufot, was rejected by 25 members of the 26-member Assembly during plenary,
In the absence of a seconder, which is required for any motion to be considered for the first reading of the bill.
The lawmaker who proposed the bill, had argued that dogs are often killed in cruel ways while expressing concern that dog meat consumption exposed people to diseases, particularly rabies and Salmonella.
His breathtaking submission however, could not stop the lawmakers from expressing their sentiments amid search for a regulation or prohibition of dog meat consumption and sale in Akwa Ibom State.
The rejection of the bill seeking to stop the consumption and sale of dog meat, will continue in the State where it’s seen as a popular delicacy that is often consumed with palm wine and other drinks.
