AIG sets up Edo vigilante 2 months after suspension

AIG Arungwa Nwazue, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 5 Police Headquarters in Benin City, comprising Edo and Delta States Police Commands have reconstituted the vigilante Group, raising expectations amongst Edo residents whose fates have been hanging on cliff hanger.

The new quasi security outfit codename Edo State Police vigilante group, replaces thr earlier suspended Edo State Security Network, which was suspended indefinitely from operating in the State by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun two months ago in the build up to the September 21st Edo governorship election.

In defiance to the IGP’s orders suspending the former security outfit, Governor Godwin Obaseki directing members of the ESSN to resume regular duties, in a bid to halt the rising crime in some parts of the State.

TheNewspad reports that the Governor’s directive was ignored by members of th vigilante group a week ago.

In a statement on Monday, Police Public Relations officer, Zone 5 Benin Headquarters,
SP Tijani Momoh said the Edo State Police vigilante Group was set up “for the purpose of gathering information for the Police. They are also to collaborate with the Police to ensure a watertight security”.

“Their operational modalities will be released in due course. In this regard, the AIG further advise the good people of Edo state to cooperate with the Police, and the new vigilante group for utmost policing, the Police spokesman said.
