A 35-year-old hunter, Suleiman Hamza, has been arrested and taken into police custody over the fatal negligent shooting of 13-year-old Mubarak Mohd in the Gamawa area of Bauchi State, Nigeria.
His arrest followed a report filed by a 50-year-old man from Udubo village at the police station on September 5, 2026, at about 2045 hours, according to a statement released by the Nigeria Police Command in the state through SP Nafiu Habib.
According to the statement, Hamza returned from a hunting trip and negligently left his loaded dane gun inside his room before leaving the house.
The young victim subsequently entered the room, pulled the trigger, and suffered fatal injuries from the accidental discharge.
The statement noted, “Upon receipt of the report, a team of detectives attached to the Gamawa Division mobilized to the scene immediately for a preliminary investigation.
”The victim was evacuated to the General Hospital, Gamawa, for a post-mortem examination, where the medical doctor on duty confirmed him dead.”
”Photographs were taken and the remains were released to relatives for burial according to Islamic rites.”
”The suspect has been arrested, preliminary investigation has been concluded, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a discreet investigation,” the police spokesman stated.
In a separate incident, the command successfully foiled an armed robbery along the Kajala-Kere road while securing the arrest of the suspect linked to the tragic shooting in Gamawa.
The state’s fight against violent crime yielded results on September 5, 2026, at about 2145 hrs, when police received a report that hoodlums armed with cutlasses and sticks had blocked the Kajala-Kere road.
The attackers dispossessed Ado and three others—all from Kere village—of two Bajaj motorcycles, two Android phones, and a power bank.
The report was received from the Officer-in-Charge of the Kajala Police Outstation on the outskirts of Burra.
Following the report, a combined team from the Burra Division and local vigilantes was swiftly mobilized to the scene.
Upon sighting the team, the hoodlums abandoned the stolen motorcycles and fled into the surrounding bushes.
Law enforcement recovered the motorcycles and combed the area to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Reacting to the developments, the Commissioner of Police in the State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the operatives for their prompt response in foiling the robbery.
He also expressed profound sadness over the tragedy in Gamawa, cautioning hunters and firearm owners to handle weapons with utmost care and keep them out of the reach of children. He further called for timely public reporting to prevent crimes before they occur.
