Drug trafficker jailed 15 years after attempted attack on NDLEA agents

Date:

A 20-year-old drug trafficker, Muhammad Maharazu, has convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment over drug-related offences, following attempted attack on operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Maharazu, was arrested on February 14, 2026, by operatives of the agency attached to the Commander’s Special Joint Task Force at the notorious Filin Idi drug den in Kano, where he was found in possession of various illicit substances, including Diazepam tablets.

According to the agency, the suspect attempted to evade arrest by producing a long knife and threatening officers who were pursuing him. He was, however, tactically disarmed and taken into custody before being charged to court.

Delivering judgment on April 15, 2026, Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court One, Kano, sentenced Maharazu to 15 years imprisonment without an option of fine, with the sentence to take effect from the date of judgment.

Reacting to the ruling, the Commander of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, DY Lawal, described the judgment as decisive, noting that it sends a strong warning to individuals involved in drug trafficking and those who resort to violence to resist arrest. He reiterated that the command remains resolute in its mandate, stressing that Kano would not serve as a safe haven for drug offenders, regardless of the quantity involved.

The command further stated that the custodial sentence would serve as a deterrent to others, while urging members of the public to continue supporting efforts to combat substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the State.
