Trader kills Okada rider in attempt to steal, pay 3rd wife’ bride price

Tragedy struck when a 30-year-old petty trader, identified only as Wadata allegedly stabbed a 25-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Basiru Mohammed to death in his attempt to snatch his motorcycle to fundraise bride price of his planned marriage ceremony with his third wife in the State.

Yau, allegedly engaged the victim, a resident of Zango Sa’idawa, in a fisticuffs during which he allegedly used a knife to fatally stab him before fleeing with his red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle bearing registration number NNG 813 UM, according to the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Command in the State, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil said.

He revealed on Friday in a statement that the murder suspect was arrested following a distress call received on October 16, 2025, from a vigilant resident of Unguwan Dr. Sulaiman Adamu Quarters, near the old Airport area in Bauchi State where the incident occurred.

Wakil who relied on preliminary investigation conducted by the Command, noted that a team of detectives from ‘E’ Division, Yelwa, was immediately dispatched to the location.

According to Leadership Newspaper, the victim was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), where he was sadly confirmed brought in dead, BID by a doctor.

The victim’s body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for a postmortem examination, according to the statement, which listed recovered exhibits at the scene, to include one Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, a blood-stained knife, a pair of shoes in addition to an Android phone belonging to the criminal suspect who was we tracked by detectives successfully tracked and arrested and immediately kept in police custody.

Part of the statement reads, “During the interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, attributing his actions to financial difficulties linked to his intention to marry a third wife.

He (criminal suspect) deceitfully lured the motorcyclist and utilised a knife to stab him during the altercation,” the statement added.

In the meantime, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Sani-Omolori, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution of the murder suspect.
