Police operatives have arrested 33-year-old
man, Sunday Echege who reportedly cut-off his wife’s wrist with a machete over suspicion of his wife’s involvement in extra marital affair in Enugu State, South East.
Spokesman for the Nigeria Police in Enugu State, SP Daniel Ndukwe said on Tuesday in a statement that the male resident of Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement in Ibagwa-Ani Community, Nsukka LGA, was caught by residents of the area attacking his wife, Chinonso Echege.
The murder suspect was handed over to the Enugu State Police Command, through its operatives attached to Okpuje Division, on January 26, 2025, according to the statement which said the machete allegedly used in committing the crime was recovered from the suspect.
Police also said, “Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, who has confessed to the crime, claimed he acted out of suspicion that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs”.
Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to ensure a thorough and timely investigation.
The police Commissioner assured that the suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Uzuegbu, urged Couples to resolve their differences through love, understanding, and legal means, rather than resorting to violent criminal acts.
Part of the statement reads, “The Enugu State Police Command, through its operatives attached to Okpuje Division, on January 26, 2025, arrested one Sunday Echege, a 33-year-old male resident of Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement in Ibagwa-Ani community, Nsukka LGA, for severing the left wrist of his wife, Chinonso Echege.
“The arrest was made possible with the assistance of law-abiding members of the community, and the machete used in committing the crime was recovered from the suspect.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, who has confessed to the crime, claimed he acted out of suspicion that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs.
“The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations”, according to Ndukwe.
TheNewspad reports that the victim who hails from Itchi agu, in Igbo Eze South LGA, lost her wrist while attempting to prevent the machete from cutting her her head, while her husband is from Ibagwa Ani in Nsukka in the State.
A blogger, Toyin Ndidi Taiwo-Ojo said the injured woman is currently receiving treatment at Kaetochukwu Hospital close to Urban girls area in the Coal City.
