Operatives of the Nigeria Police have rescued two police officers, ASP Etim Obungha, and injured Corporal Chukwu Odoemelam in a fatal ambush and attack on police patrol team by gunmen at about 07:30hrs,
on Wednesday in Abia State, South East.
ASP Obungha, was rescued successfully unhurt, while Corporal Odoemelam, who sustained bullet injury in the attack, was promptly rushed to the hospital and is currently responding to treatment.
In a statement, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Command in Abia State, ASP Maureen Chinaka said the State Commissioner, CP Danladi Isa led the rescue team on Asaga Road by Terry Key in Ohafia and Ohafia axis.
The statement said the hoodlums, unable to withstand the firepower of the police officers, fled the scene after their attack, was repelled.
Tragically, the body of ASP Etet Uboulo who did not survive the earlier attack was recovered by the police rescue team, the statement said some exhibits were recovered from the crime scene during the operation.
The statement noted that investigation into the crime is ongoing with the view to tracking down the hoodlums.
CP Isa who assured residents of the State of safety of lives and property, further assured residents of the state that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be made to face justice.
“Watertight security measures have been emplaced as tactical teams, operatives from Ohafia Area Command in collaboration with the army component from 14 Brigade, Ohafia are currently on patrol in the area”, ASP Chinaka said.
