‘Cultists’ kill trader in Benin market invasion

Suspected cultists have reportedly hacked a yet-to-be identified trader to death in Benin market invasion in Oredo Local Government Council in Edo State.

The tragedy struck 24 hours after the State governor, Monday Okpebholo gave the Nigeria Police Commissioner in the State, a marching order to end cult war and other crimes across the State.

TheNewspad recalls that a similar fatal attack had happened three weeks ago when armed some members of the brotherhood alleged murdered a trader in the presence of his wife and children at his shop, opposite Uselu market in Egor Local Government Area of the State.

The latest attack on Friday’s in Ibiwe lane, forced business owners and shoppers to run shelter skelter to avoid been caught up in a ricochet from the assailants who stormed Ibiwe lane at about 3p.m in Oredo Local Government Area.

TheNewspad reports that unmasked gunmen who came prepared in their numbers, were said to have repeatedly shot at the trader in front of his shop, causing pandemonium.

It was also learnt that the inability for the bullets to penetrate the victim’s body, angered the alleged assailants.

Having noticed that the trader did not immediately succumb, the hoodlums descended on him with machete and other harmful objects, before the victim slumped and became unconscious.

Sources said the victim was abandoned in the pool of his own blood before the arrival of policemen at Oba market Area Command on Oba market road. The Command is less than 200 meters from the crime scene.

After the assailants have left the crime scene, some youths in the area, arrived the scene and hauled the fatally injured trader away to a nearby hospital in the presence of his neighbours who wept uncontrollably over the fatal incident.

Traders in street and other adjourning streets, including Mission road, Jegede and other adjourning streets, later returned and lock their shops due to safety concerns in the presence of befuddled onlookers, amid tension.

Meanwhile, unknown reportedly murdered a former official of the disbanded Public Works Volunteer (PUWOV) on Thursday in Cook Road.

The tragedy occured near the victim’s father’s house on Cook Road in Oredo Local Government Area of the State, which is fast sliding under the grip of gunmen.

In the same day, unknown gunmen also smashed an unidentified resident of the State around Akenzua axis in Benin, leaving behind his widow and children.

Spokesman for the Nigeria Police Command in the State, SP Moses Yamu, is yet-to comment on the recent incidents.
