Vigilantes ignore Obaseki’s call to resume duties

Members of the Edo State Security Network better known as vigilantes have ignored order by Governor Godwin Obaseki to resume their duties in response to the deteriorating security situation in the State.

His directive followed the State Security Council meeting on Monday during which the Council undertook a review of the recent rise in homicides and other security incidents in the State.

Obaseki’s order, which was conveyed in a statement by the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, brushed aside the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s order, suspending activities of the group indefinitely prior to the September 21st governorship election in across the State.

He also noted that the current State of insecurity in the State would not be tolerated in the Edo State.

Obaseki also mandated the State Commissioner of Police to ensure the restoration of order and sanity in the State.

He also restated the government commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the State, ahead of November 12th 2024 handing over date.

Reactions have trailed the directive, which police authorities have yet to respond to at the time of filing this report.

Some netizens on social Media space, commended the Governor’s stance, others described the directive as exercise in futility over poor welfare package for vigilantes.
