Hoodlums invade UNIBEN Energy Centre

Energy Centre in the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State, has been reportedly invaded by hoodlums, raising safety concerns on the institution’s Campuses.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday on Ugbowo Campus of the University, barely three weeks to Professor Lilian Salami’s exit from office as Vice Chancellor of the University.

The non-implementation of federal government approved new minimum wage for casual workers, by the University’s Management team, has reduced the workforce, and uncovered areas by Patrol Guards (PGs).

The Energy Centre houses vital electricity installations and other valuable assets, ahead of the forthcoming Convocation ceremonies of the University.

The Centre is located on the corridor of bush path leading to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital exit gate.

In October this year, members of UNIBEN Governing Council are set to brainstorm on issues affecting administration of the University, including agitation over the ongoing minimum wage crisis for UNIBEN casual workers who were paid September salaries the sum of N29,976 on October 9, 2024.

Most of the PGs who are graduates were engaged in 2021 along with their counterpart in the Sanitation Unit in the school, according to University sources.
