Four criminal suspects have been arrested by the Nigeria Police for alleged Sextortion and Romance scam involving a male Croatian national on a dating app and claimed to be a woman.
The male suspects, Abodunrin Rasheed, Abodunrin Tunde and Abodunrin Rokeeb were nabbed after seeking ransom as a condition not to publish his pictures on internet.
Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) arrested the quartet, following a report via the NPF-NCCC E-Reporting portal and an intelligence report from the Center.
Spokesman of the Nigeria police, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi who confirmed their arrest in a statement, however did not give the name of the 4th arrested suspect, who was also linked to the scandalours attempt to use the nude photo to blackmail the victim.
He revealed that the suspects continuous online chats with foreign national, progressed to Instagram and WhatsApp leading to an intimate relationship with the foreigner.
But, the Croatian was deceived into sending nude pictures of himself through the dating app, according to police investigation.
ACP Adejobi said the suspects subsequently conspired and pressured him to pay ransom or have his pictures sent to his family and friends.
Thereafter, the operatives of the NPF-NCCC conducted a due investigation, following the obtained information from the report, which led to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the following exhibits related to the crime.
The recovered exhibits include six iPhones, one Techno phone, one Samsung phone, and a Lexus car.
Further investigations by the police, revealed that the suspects have previously engaged in numerous similar cybercriminal activities, both collectively and individually.
In addition, the suspects had defrauded and extorted money from their numerous victims globally, according to the statement.
The proceed of these crimes were primarily received through gift cards like the iTunes gift cards, steam gift cards etc.
Adejobi assured that the
suspects will be charged in court upon completion of the investigations.
The statement further urge Nigerians to be wary of suspicious online activities of scammers and other cybercriminals, cautioning individuals and groups involved in all sorts of cybercrime.
The Nigeria Police Force will not relent in its fight against all sorts of crime and criminality and assures Nigerians of his dedication to bolstering national security and tackling all forms of crime in every sector.
Police also encourage citizens to report any suspicious activities through the e-reporting portal of the NPF-NCCC: nccc.npf.gov.ng/ereport/signin to aid in the timely identification and apprehension of cybercriminals.
