The Nigerian Medical Doctors (NMA) has called on the federal government to establish a military Base to curb banditry and reverse the ‘Japa — movement of Medical doctors and skilled health workers across the State.
‘Japa’ is loosely translates to “run away” or “escape. The syndrome found its way into Nigerian colloquial expression, which is used to convey the idea of swift and evasive action in Yoruba language.
Vice Chairman of NMA in the State, Dr Ibrahim Jubril who made the recommendation at a Media briefing in Gusau, lamented that the prevailing security crisis in the State, causing the movement of Medical doctors from Nigeria to developed Countries,
has complicated issues for the health Sector.
Jubril appealed to the federal government to intensify the fight against banditry in North East part of Nigeria, noting that insecurity, which he claim is already overwhelming the already fragile health system in the State, is getting worse by the day.
He said, “Our highly skilled Medical professionals leave the shore of Nigeria in search for greener pasture. This has greatly affected the healthcare system in a negative way.
“In addition to this in Zamfara State, it is a twin tragedy which Japa syndrome has complicated. In view of the prevailing in Zamfara and other neighbouring States, we are recommending as follows:
“We want the federal government as a matter of priority intensify the fight against banditry
“We want to State categorically that the situation is getting worse by the day and has overwhelmed the already fragile health system in the State.
“We wish to recommend that the federal government plan a strategic measure and look at the possibility of moving a significant military operation into Zamfara State”, he said.
