Briggs: I won’t risk my life over hunger protests

Niger Delta activist, Annkio Briggs says she would not risk her life for August 1st 2024 tagged #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests for the sake of Nigeria.

The protests seek to raise awareness against the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu-led government arising from petrol subsidy removal and other issues of concern including improve welfare for citizens.

Briggs made the remarks on Wednesday African Independent Television (AIT) Kakaaki breakfast programme where she kicked against government subsidy and other privileges Dangote investments enjoy, which other peasant farmers and women do not have access to in Nigeria.

The human Rights activist stated that she is fully in support of the protests, but expressed concern that hoodlums could hijack the protests and cause violence, thereby leading to unintended consequences.

According to Briggs, “When we are being cautious about the effects, the danger that the protest poses, if it were just ordinary protest that we will be allowed to come out and protest, I will be out to protest because I have grievances”.

“But, I personally will not risk my life anymore within Nigeria, it doesn’t worth it to die in the process of making statements in Nigeria. No!”, she said.

“But, in my opinion as a person, there is no doubt that there is bad governance in Nigeria. It has being going on for a very long time. But, I am most concern as a mother, grandmother, elderstates woman and a leader as well as a leader that when the government indeed says do not embark on this protests and that hoodlums may take it over, I become very worried.

“Again, if the protest is going to make things better for Nigerians, then, let it be held. No Nigerian should be sacrificed. This is why our primary concern is, we should begin to insist on who takes responsibility for #Badgovernance. People cannot afford medical services and they are dying of hunger in Nigeria”, Briggs said.
